Ludowici Clay Tile in DFW: A Terra Cotta Roof With the Look of Slate

October 28, 2026
6 min read

If you love the look of a slate roof but want the warmth and history of fired clay, Ludowici is worth a close look. Ludowici has been making terra cotta roof tile since 1888, and its roofs sit on historic estates, universities, and landmark buildings across the country. Their slate-profile tiles bring that same craftsmanship to homes that want a classic, chiseled-stone look. Here’s what DFW homeowners should know before choosing it.

What Is Ludowici Slate-Profile Tile?

Ludowici’s slate tiles are terra cotta, not stone. They’re pressed with a quarried texture and chiseled edges so the finished roof reads as slate from the street, while the material itself is fired clay. They can be laid in straight courses for a crisp, formal look or staggered for a more rustic, hand-split appearance.

For homes where roof weight is a concern, Ludowici also makes LudoSlate, a lighter interlocking version that works well on renovation projects where the existing structure wasn’t designed for a heavy roof.

How It Handles Texas Weather

North Texas throws a little of everything at a roof: long stretches of 100-degree heat, intense UV, sudden temperature swings, the occasional hard freeze, and spring storm season.

Heat and UV

Because Ludowici’s color is fused into the tile in a high-temperature kiln, it doesn’t fade or chalk under Texas sun the way surface coatings can. Clay tile also allows air to move beneath it, which helps reduce heat transfer into the attic.

Freeze-Thaw

Ludowici tile carries ASTM Grade 1 certification for less than 2% water absorption. Low absorption matters during our freeze events: water that soaks into a tile can expand when it freezes, and a Grade 1 tile resists that.

Fire

Terra cotta is noncombustible, an advantage for homes with heavily wooded lots or properties near open land.

Storms

Any roof in DFW should be evaluated for storm exposure. Impact performance varies by profile and system, so we’ll walk you through the specific ratings for the tile you’re considering, along with how it affects your insurance coverage, during your consultation.

Colors and Styles That Fit DFW Homes

Ludowici’s slate profiles come in 12 standard color blends, including grays, blacks, reds, and greens, and the company can create custom blends. Because terra cotta is a natural material, no two tiles are perfectly identical, which gives the roof the subtle variation you’d expect from real stone.

Slate-look terra cotta pairs especially well with:

  • •French Country and Chateau-style estates
  • •Tudor and English Manor homes
  • •Traditional and Transitional homes with steep rooflines
  • •Historic renovations where the original roof was clay or slate

These are architectural styles we see often in Southlake, Westlake, and Colleyville, where homeowners and HOAs expect materials that match the character of the home.

Why Installation Training Matters With Clay Tile

A clay tile roof is only as good as the system underneath it. Underlayment selection, batten layout, fastening, and especially flashing at valleys, chimneys, and walls all determine whether a roof lasts for generations or develops leaks within a few years. Clay tile also requires careful handling and foot traffic on the roof so tiles aren’t cracked during installation.

That’s why DW Construction completed hands-on Ludowici training covering the product line and the installation of multiple tile profiles, and was awarded placement in Ludowici’s F.I.T. Program. When you hire us for a Ludowici roof, you get a crew trained on the manufacturer’s methods, not one learning on your home.

Weight and Structural Considerations

Traditional clay tile is heavier than most roofing materials, so before recommending it we evaluate your roof framing and decking. On new construction, the structure can be designed for tile from the start. On a re-roof, we’ll tell you whether your home can carry a standard Ludowici profile, whether a lighter option like LudoSlate is the better fit, or whether any structural reinforcement is needed. You’ll know before any work begins.

If you’d like that answer before you decide anything, start with a free roof inspection.

Is Ludowici Right for Your Home?

Every premium roofing system we install has its strengths, and the right one depends on your home’s architecture, structure, budget, HOA requirements, and how you want the roof to look in 30 or 50 years. DW Construction installs Ludowici clay tile, natural slate, Brava synthetic slate and tile, standing seam metal, and more, so our recommendation is based on your home, not on the one product we happen to sell.

If the classic look of slate with the heritage of fired terra cotta appeals to you, Ludowici belongs on your short list.
