Clay Tile Roofing — Built to Last a Century

Clay tile roofing is one of the oldest and most proven roofing systems in the world — and for good reason. Fired from natural clay, these tiles are dimensionally stable, impervious to rot and insect damage, and capable of lasting 75 to 100 years when properly installed. For luxury homes in Fort Worth, Southlake, Westlake, Colleyville, and Flower Mound, clay tile represents the pinnacle of permanent roofing investment.

DW Construction installs clay tile roofing systems for high-value residential properties across the DFW Metroplex. Every installation is engineered for North Texas conditions — accounting for thermal movement, deck loading, and the high-wind and hail exposure that defines our weather environment. We handle HOA documentation and architectural review submissions as part of every project.

Clay is one of three tile systems we install — our tile roofing hub compares all three, and our concrete tile roofing page covers the other fired-and-cured option. It is also a cornerstone of the luxury roofing work we do across the metroplex. Many clay-tile homes also include flat sections over porches and decks — a separate low-slope system we install and tie into the tile ourselves; see our flat & low-slope roofing page for those details.

CLAY TILE PROFILES

Clay Tile Styles for DFW Luxury Homes

Clay tile is available in a range of profiles that complement different architectural styles. DW Construction works with homeowners and architects to select the right profile, color, and finish for each project — including HOA-compliant options for neighborhoods across Southlake, Westlake, and Colleyville.

Spanish Barrel Tile

The iconic rounded profile associated with Mediterranean, Spanish Colonial, and mission-style architecture. The most common clay tile profile in DFW luxury neighborhoods. Available in a wide range of terracotta, earth tone, and glazed finishes.

Flat Tile

A low-profile clay tile that complements French Country, Tuscan, and contemporary luxury architecture. Flat clay tile reads as clean and refined — an increasingly popular choice for transitional and modern estate homes across Southlake and Westlake.

S-Tile (Double Roman)

A two-curve profile that combines the visual weight of barrel tile with a slightly lower pitch requirement. Popular on Mediterranean and Italian-influenced luxury homes. Offers strong visual depth and shadow lines that complement high-end masonry and stucco exteriors.

LUDOWICI TILE

Ludowici Tile

Much of the historic clay tile on Fort Worth and Dallas roofs was made by Ludowici, and it is still in production today. Identifying it, matching missing pieces, and repairing it correctly is specialized enough that we gave it its own page: Ludowici tile roof repair and restoration.

OUR PROCESS

How We Repair a Clay Tile Roof

01

Photograph the underside stamp and the profile, and measure the tile. The stamp identifies the maker and narrows the manufacturing window.

02

Check the attic, garage, and crawl spaces for the builder’s original spare stock. On estate homes this is common, and it is always the best match available.

03

Where no spare stock exists, pull sound tile from a low-visibility elevation — a rear slope or a dormer nobody sees — to repair the elevation that faces the street.

04

Order matched replacement tile to refill the hidden slope.

05

Reset with correct fastening and underlayment repair, not mastic or sealant.

The reason “close enough from a salvage yard” fails is the same reason the color has not faded: the color is fired into the glaze rather than applied to the surface. A near-match from a different maker, a different firing, or a different decade weathers on a different curve — it ages to a different color at a different rate — and reads as a patch from the street permanently. On a home where the roof is the architecture, that patch is the thing a buyer or an appraiser notices first. The same matching discipline applies to slate roof repair; for an active leak on any roof system, start on our roof repair page.
