What moves the price within that range:
IMPACT PERFORMANCE
The standard for impact resistance is UL 2218, which runs Class 1 through Class 4. Class 4 is the highest. The test drops a 2-inch steel ball onto the roofing sample from 20 feet, twice in the same spot. To pass Class 4, the material cannot show evidence of cracking, splitting, or rupture.
Asphalt shingles can earn a Class 4 rating. The rating reflects performance on the day the shingle was tested. After years of UV exposure and thermal cycling, asphalt shingles lose granules and flexibility — the same hail impact a new shingle survives can crack an aged one. Metal does not lose impact resistance with age. A standing seam panel hit by hail in year 20 performs the same as it did in year 1.
Insurance carriers know this. A Class 4 metal roof typically qualifies for the same or better premium credit than a Class 4 asphalt shingle, and the metal roof will still be on the house when the asphalt roof would have needed replacement.
