What Westover Hills Roofs Are Actually Made Of
Westover Hills incorporated in 1931, and its housing stock is largely pre-war and mid-century estate homes. That means clay tile, natural slate, copper, and standing seam — plus, on almost every one of those houses, flat low-slope sections over porches, porte-cochères, second-floor decks, and rear additions. Newer builds and re-roofs in the area have moved toward synthetic slate and composite tile.
This mix is unusual. Most Fort Worth roofing companies are set up for asphalt shingles, and the materials on these streets need a different crew — one that works in clay and slate, fabricates and welds flat-roof membrane, and details the transition where the two systems meet. That is the work we do here.
RECENT WORK IN WESTOVER HILLS
A Synthetic Slate and TPO Roof, Inspected
This was an inspection, not a replacement. We walked a roof in town that pairs a synthetic slate field with TPO flat sections — the exact combination we see on many of the larger homes here — and the place we spent the most time was the transition where the two systems meet.
The synthetic slate is Inspire Classic Slate in Mist Grey, a composite of recycled plastic and dolomitic limestone. We found it on inspection; we did not install it, and we are not affiliated with Inspire. We are a Brava Preferred Contractor, and this was a competitor’s product on someone else’s roof.
The detail that decides whether these roofs leak is the junction where the membrane meets the slate — the termination bar, the counterflashing, the step-flashing run. That is where flat roofs almost always fail, and it is the first place we look. The tile itself specifies a minimum slope of 3:12, which is exactly why the low-slope sections of this house are a membrane roof rather than slate — see our flat & low-slope roofing page for those systems.

LUDOWICI TILE
Matching Tile on a Neighboring Estate
On a neighboring property we repaired missing clay tile — a repair to replace broken and missing pieces, not a re-roof. The tile is a shake-profile shingle tile: terra cotta made to read like hand-split wood shake.
The tile is Ludowici. “Ludowici-Celadon” is the name the manufacturer used from 1906 to 1994, so the stamp on the underside helps date the roof. This tile is natural unglazed terra cotta, which means the color is the fired clay body itself and runs all the way through — not a glaze applied to the surface.
Because the color is fired through the clay rather than painted on, a near-match pulled from a salvage yard weathers on a different curve and reads as a patch from the street permanently.
